Electricity: from renewable energy systems to heat pumps

Challenge

Maribo Varmeværk has a need for a heat-producing unit. In accordance with current legislation, we must use a heat pump.

Solution idea

Considering transport costs within the network, this project is investigating how and to what extent electricity from wind turbines and solar panels can be used, and when it is optimal for the heat pump to take over from the burning of wood chips. Contech Automatik will develop the control and regulation portion of the system.

Furthermore, the project will investigate both technical and economic solutions with a central electric heat pump in combination with own generation of electricity from wind turbines and solar cells, as well as any possibilities involving an electric battery. This solution will be compared with alternative solutions for security of supply, such as an extra boiler, extra heat storage, and distributed heat pumps.

Project deliverables

This project will develop a control algorithm for heating management.

This project is financed by Energy Cluster Denmark’s Clean Tech Innovation (CTI) support programme. It offers three years of support to allow small- and medium-sized businesses to collaboratively develop innovative electronic products focused on energy optimisation. The CTI project is supported by the European Regional Development Fund.
