Establishment of Hydrogen Corridor in the Baltic Sea Launched

11. March 2024

The establishment of a hydrogen corridor between Finland and Estonia, connected with local hydrogen hotspots including those in Denmark, was initiated in June 2023. Energy Cluster Denmark is a partner in the international project BalticSeaH2, which aims to ensure hydrogen infrastructure throughout the Baltic Sea region.

To address the global climate crisis, there is a significant need to replace fossil fuels with green fuels. Not only must the technologies mature enough to produce large quantities of green fuels, but it is also necessary to ensure that the infrastructure is in place to distribute them more efficiently and lower costs.

Following the war in Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis in Europe, there is a need to accelerate the transition to clean energy even further and establish sufficient energy infrastructure in Europe. Green hydrogen holds great potential in this regard, but it requires cross-border collaboration and infrastructure to be utilized on a large scale.

The project will address the challenges of energy security and the green transition by establishing a hydrogen corridor in the Baltic Sea. The main artery will be located in the Gulf of Finland. Besides the main artery, the project will establish Connected Valleys in the countries around the Baltic Sea as a means to validate solutions from the Main Valley and pave the way for new corridors in other parts of Europe. This setup will not only address energy security and the green transition but also accelerate economic growth in the Baltic Sea region and Europe.

By the project’s conclusion, it will have developed, scaled, and demonstrated hydrogen use in production, storage, and distribution, as well as demonstrated the use of hydrogen in various sectors such as industry, mobility, and energy through a range of use cases. Finally, the project will ensure that the results can be replicated in other regions.
