How do we create a scalable transport infrastructure for CO₂?
Description
Denmark has set ambitious targets for reducing CO₂ emissions. These can only be achieved if Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is implemented at scale – and within the next few years.
However, one key challenge stands in the way: the transportation of CO₂.
Pipelines are not a realistic solution for small and medium-sized emitters that are geographically dispersed. Transporting CO₂ in liquid form under high pressure and cryogenic temperatures is capital-intensive, requires specialized equipment in limited supply, and raises safety and regulatory concerns.
Without a flexible, safe, and economically viable transport solution, CCS risks being limited to a few large point-source emitters – thereby slowing down the green transition.
Purpose
The purpose of this innoNET is to bring together the value chain and work concretely with the general challenges related to CO₂ transportation – whether the solution involves pipelines, ships, trucks, containers, hubs, or new hybrid concepts.
We focus on barriers, opportunities, and collaborations that can move CO₂ transport from pilot stage to full implementation.
CO₂ Infrastruktur projektcase som afsæt for dialog
As part of the day, the CO₂ Infrastructure project will be presented. The project is working on a container-based solution where CO₂ is transported in solid form (dry ice) at atmospheric pressure. The solution is designed to integrate with existing container and port logistics and is demonstrated in connection with shipment from the Port of Esbjerg for offshore storage.
The case serves as a starting point for discussion. The broader objective is to assess multiple transport models and identify the cross-cutting challenges that must be addressed to scale CCS.
