Samsø Kommune

Logo

For many years, Samsø has been at the forefront as a role model for green transition.

In 2021, Samsø Municipality was named by the UN as a UN Global Climate Action Award Winner together with Paris and Mexico City.

In 2030, Samsø will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent compared to 1990.

Samsø must be a climate-neutral island in 2050.

In 2030, Samsø must be an island that has and will continuously adapt to and mitigate climate change.

A large part of the energy we use on Samsø comes from sea/land turbines and solar cells. Samsø currently produces more electricity than the island's residents and guests consume.

Many of the municipality's buildings are supplied with electricity from solar cells. The municipality's vehicles are electric cars. Many of the island's houses and businesses are heated by four straw- and wood-chip-fired district heating plants. Many Samsø residents have replaced their oil boilers with heat pumps and pellet stoves.

Samsø is surrounded by water, and as the global temperature rises, we as a society must tackle significant challenges with climate adaptation. That is why we are actively working to incorporate climate change from a resource perspective and in our initiatives across sectors.

We are well on our way.
