About the project
Challenge
The green transition and the associated reduction in CO2 emissions greatly affect the transportation sector, where various solutions must be implemented in the future. It is expected that electric vehicles (EVs) will dominate the sector for light vehicles, but electric batteries have low energy density, limiting their use in heavy transport. Therefore, liquid sustainable biofuels are necessary for long-distance heavy transportation. In recent years, interest in green methanol and other sustainable biofuels has increased significantly.
Solution
CCU-HUB AALBORG supports the Power-to-X value chain and will promote the expansion of the existing infrastructure so that hydrogen and CO2 can be converted into green fuel in the form of methanol for use in the transport sector.
Therefore, by the end of the project, the following will be achieved:
- Establishment of 3 new methanol refueling stations in the Aalborg area.
- Relocation and planned scaling of the methanol demonstration plant.
- Business model for expanding the necessary renewable energy (RE) and access to CO2, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including Aalborg Municipality.
- Complete design of a 300MW methanol plant.
Impact
- Frameworks for expanding renewable energy and access to CO2 in the Aalborg area have been established.
- European Energy’s intentions for significant investment in renewable energy and methanol production in Aalborg can be realized.
- Increased testing and development related to the methanol demonstration plant at the Port of Aalborg.
- Ongoing demonstration, operation, and optimization of methanol infrastructure, including vehicles and refueling stations.
The project is part of the northern Jutland business hub, CO2Vision, which is managed by a consortium consisting of Energy Cluster Denmark, Erhvervshus Nordjylland, Aalborg University, Aalborg Portland A/S, Arbejdsmarkedskontor Midt/Nord, Business Region North Denmark, Green Hub Denmark, EVIDA, and the EU office of North Denmark.
CO2Vision is funded by REACT-EU funds.
