Challenge

Offshore wind turbines are typically connected to a transformer platform in groups of 5–8 offshore wind turbines. The turbines are connected in series, which means that they cannot be disconnected individually. If a short circuit occurs in an individual offshore wind turbine, not only does significant damage occurs in the turbine itself, but all the other turbines in the series also stop. Such an error means operating losses for the park owner, as well as an increased safety risk when servicing offshore wind turbines.

Solution idea

The partners in this project will develop a sensor and monitoring system to detect possible errors before a short circuit occurs. By and large, all offshore wind turbines are installed according to the same principle. Still, some offshore wind turbines fall out of service. The project partners will investigate the reason behind this.
