About the project
Challenge
There are several forms of CO2 capture under development, but the only one that is currently commercially available in full scale is amine scrubbing, which, however, requires a lot of energy and large amounts of amino-based solvent that wears down the equipment.
Idea for solution
The project will investigate an alternative CO2 capture method called cryogenic CO2 capture. The cryogenic technique is based on the cooling of flue gas, which enables a higher CO2 recovery and an increased purity of CO2 compared to other technologies. The project will investigate further possibilities for the development of the technology, but also how to use the captured CO2 to produce methane, which can be used for balancing the electricity grid and district heating production.
The project was financed by the Ministry of Education and Research.
Effect
With a greater knowledge of kyrogenic CO2 capture, Denmark can help pioneer a promising technology and make CO2 capture more energy efficient.
