About the project

Challenge

Local energy communities can play a greater role in the future energy system by producing, sharing and storing renewable energy while helping to balance the electricity grid. However, most energy management systems today control individual households or technologies separately.

This makes it difficult to coordinate solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, electric vehicles and other energy assets across an entire local community and fully utilise their combined flexibility.

Solution

The project develops and tests an AI-based solution for integrated energy management in local energy communities. A digital twin combines data on energy production, consumption, storage, prices and weather and uses AI to forecast and optimise energy use.

Local EDGE devices enable direct communication with and real-time control of assets such as batteries, solar panels, heat pumps and electric vehicles. The solution will be tested in the Sydstevns Energy Community with the aim of reducing energy costs, increasing the use of locally produced renewable energy and reducing pressure on the electricity grid.
