About the project

A storage-based fast charging station for electric cars with minimal impact on the power grid. The purpose of the project is to develop and test a platform concept for charging stations for fast charging of electric cars using built-in energy storage.

Challenge

The purpose of the FlexiCharge project is to develop and test a platform concept for charging stations for fast charging of electric cars using built-in energy storage. The energy store, which will be based on batteries and/or capacitors, will be charged from the mains with a continuous moderate current distributed over time. The power grid will thus not be burdened with large short-term currents. This reduces the impact of the fast charger on the power grid considerably, and it potentially will allow the charger to support the power grid if it is experiencing issues. In addition, energy consumption will be adjustable to compensate for hourly fluctuations in the production of electricity from wind turbines and solar cells.

Solution idea

The platform concept, developed based on interaction with application-orientated research at SDU, will be used by Eegholm A/S and Converdan A/S as a foundation for the development, manufacture and sale of electronic components for the storage-based fast charger. The fast charging stand itself will be developed, produced, set up and maintained by Hamag A/S.

Project deliverables

Component design of all sub-components in the specified functional areas, system design of complete solution, based on all sub-components for scaling 1) Mechanical designs created with a view towards scaling, and 2) Design proposals for user interface and system diagram with interfaces described. Implementation of sub-components completed and function-tested, as well as integration test completed. Test plan available, including prototypes ready for field testing, and field test completed, with conclusion from test results.
