Green Vessel

This project will gather research-based knowledge about available technologies, their maturity, and the challenges facing them from a wide range of existing projects and actors. These data will be compared against a survey of sailing patterns and needs from a typical operator (ESVAGT). The project group will then uncover the advantages and disadvantages of the individual technologies, their maturity, and the time frames for associated infrastructure on land and at sea. The project will also analyse the possibilities for optimisation, with possible hybrid solutions related to the special sailing patterns. The project will bring together a broad team of problem solvers, so that sectors involved with electricity/battery operation, hydrogen and fuel cells, ammonia, and biodiesel will be joined together in discovering the best decisions.

Challenge

Denmark has set a goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 70% by the year 2030. Service companies must also participate to achieve this goal. There are many often immature technologies in use, and there is a need to clarify the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies for coastal service operations in order to make it easier for shipping companies to make the correct decisions.

Solution idea

The project will collect relevant existing knowledge and project results on this topic, as well as surveying sailing data, power consumption, and safety requirements for relevant ships. The collected knowledge will be shared with other clusters and organizations.

Project deliverables

The project’s ambition is to provide an overview describing the benefits and risks of the individual technologies and possible hybrid solutions, with a view towards significant CO2 reductions for coastal service operations. An overview of the economic consequences of the various technologies and associated CO2 reductions must also be delivered. Finally, requirements and opportunities for the necessary infrastructure, both on land and at sea, must be surveyed.
