About the project

Challenge

Capturing and storing CO2 underground is an essential path to achieving national and international climate goals. Right now, Hanstholm Port is on a major journey to become Europe's first CO2-neutral fishing port. Thisted Combined Heat and Power Plant also has a strong desire to contribute to the climate goals. The ambitions for both parties are high, and therefore, collaboration is the way forward if these ambitions and challenges are to be met. Therefore, Thisted Combined Heat and Power Plant and Hanstholm Port will lead the development of an integrated value chain to inspire other small and medium-sized players, so they can deliver CO2 at prices competitive with the CO2 from the largest players, such as refineries, cement factories, and combined heat and power plants in the largest cities.

Solution

Thisted Combined Heat and Power Plant will conduct a technical and economic feasibility study for full-scale CO2 capture at Thisted Combined Heat and Power Plant and pipeline transport to Hanstholm Port, from where CO2 can be shipped, in collaboration with specialized shipping companies, to competing sites for CO2 storage and utilization. As part of this, a feasibility study will also be carried out for a CO2 network for pipeline-delivered CO2.

Impact

The project prepares Thisted Combined Heat and Power Plant and Hanstholm Port to participate in future development driven by the following five elements:

  • Implementation of the upcoming national CCUS strategy.
  • PTX projects at Hanstholm Port.
  • Large-scale CO2 storage in the seabed off Hanstholm.
  • Expansion of CO2 capture from biogas plants and an increased number of biogas plants in Denmark.
  • Establishment of national infrastructure for hydrogen and CO2.

The project is part of the Northern Jutland business hub, CO2Vision, which is managed by a consortium consisting of Energy Cluster Denmark, Erhvervshus Nordjylland, Aalborg University, Aalborg Portland A/S, Arbejdsmarkedskontor Midt/Nord, Business Region North Denmark, Green Hub Denmark, EVIDA, and the North Denmark EU Office.

CO2Vision is funded by REACT-EU funds.
