About the project

Challenge
As energy systems become more dynamic with increasing integration of renewable energy, the need for scalable and interoperable demand-side flexibility grows.

To address this challenge, the HiFLEX project aims to develop and demonstrate a hierarchical aggregation mechanism for flexibility services in building clusters and municipal infrastructure. Our solution consists of a main aggregator that consolidates flexibility services from various Energy Management Systems (EMS), which act as sub‑aggregators and connect them to the electricity market.

Solution
Key activities include enhancing EMS capabilities for Demand Response through AI‑driven algorithms, developing a data‑exchange platform for data communication, and testing a multi‑EMS aggregator platform. This platform aims to enable small consumers to participate in energy markets, optimize energy distribution, and reduce operating costs for utilities.

The technology will be demonstrated in six pilot projects across Denmark, covering residential areas and municipal street lighting. Commercial partners, including SCANGRID and Neogrid, will lead the commercialization of the project’s outcomes.

Impact
HiFLEX enables scalable and interoperable demand‑side flexibility by aggregating flexibility from buildings and municipal infrastructure into the energy markets. The solution reduces grid load and system costs and supports the integration of renewable energy. Small consumers gain access to new flexibility markets without compromising comfort or operations.

The project lays the foundation for new commercial flexibility services and broad national and European deployment.
