About the project

Challenge

Electrification of industrial process heat is an important part of the green transition, but large-scale electric heating systems are often costly and require significant space. Current solutions typically operate at low voltage and therefore require large transformers and extensive cabling to connect to the electricity grid.

This increases both investment costs and system complexity and can slow down the electrification of high-temperature industrial processes and the integration of thermal energy storage.

Solution

HØJST investigates a new induction heater concept for thermal oil that can connect directly to the medium- and high-voltage grid. This can reduce the need for large step-down transformers and extensive low-voltage cabling.

The project will develop and assess the heater design, safety and options for rapid power modulation. Its integration with Heliac’s RockStore thermal energy storage system will also be evaluated. The aim is to enable a more compact and cost-effective solution for electrified industrial heat and thermal energy storage.
