About the project

Challenge

The majority of the vessels used by the wind industry in connection with the maintenance of offshore wind turbines are powered by diesel engines. It is not currently possible for the size of ships to sail on electric motors, although it is the companies’ own wish that the service ships should sail on green energy.

Solution

The project will investigate the possibilities of developing a combined battery and hydrogen engine that can switch between sailing on electricity and hydrogen produced sustainably. The project will investigate challenges in upscaling both technologies to a size that can power the large service vessels.

Effect

The market for hydrogen for shipping is not mature. The project contributes to giving Danish actors a better opportunity to gather necessary knowledge. In a later phase, testing and demonstration can increase Danish companies’ competitive position in the area.

The project was financed by the Ministry of Research and Education.
