About the project

Challenge

The PtX industry is rapidly growing, and there has been significant interest in the development of modular PtX solutions. Interviews with companies representing the entire value chain have shown that companies are not prepared for the material challenges that may arise with modular PtX installations, especially in keeping sensitive equipment running for many years without frequent service. This indicates a large need for developing corrosion-resistant modules for future PtX energy production, particularly in offshore or coastal environments.

In this project, the partners will develop a design for modular PtX installations that can last 25 years in a harsh environment.

Solution

The majority of the project focuses on developing a design for modular PtX units. Next, in Activity 2, the focus will be on the shell (standard or custom-built container) that encapsulates the sensitive equipment and the components that may be difficult to protect from corrosion. In the third activity, the required climate control (ventilation, temperatures, salinity, etc.) will be addressed to maintain a safe operational environment for the equipment inside the shell. Activity 4 will investigate design requirements for various integrations of the module, while Activity 5 will focus on corrosion protection. In Activity 6, the partners will have gathered input from Activities 2–5 and developed a final design specification. Finally, a workshop will be held to present the project results and share them with partners and stakeholders.

The project is co-financed by the Ministry of Education and Research.

Impact

The results of the project will be used by the participating companies, who can apply the data and findings in the further development of modular PtX solutions. The outcomes will have a significant impact on future business opportunities.
