About the project

Challenge

The electrification of district heating and industry is creating increasingly complex energy systems. Multiple heat production units, temperature levels and thermal storage systems must work together, while operations also need to respond to changing electricity prices and opportunities to provide flexibility to the power grid.

Traditional control systems and manual planning processes struggle to manage this complexity and identify the most efficient operation across the entire system.

Solution

OptiHeat develops a modular platform with mathematical optimisation models tailored to complex thermal systems in industry and district heating. The models automatically determine how production, storage and energy consumption should be scheduled across multiple temperature levels and in response to factors such as electricity market prices.

The solution will be tested at Sophus Fuglsang Export-Maltfabrik and Ringkøbing District Heating. The aim is to reduce energy costs and CO₂ emissions, make better use of renewable electricity and increase the flexibility of complex energy systems.
