About the project

Challenge
In certain remote locations in Denmark, collective energy supply is limited, requiring decentralized energy producers to provide backup power. This is particularly evident on small islands like Anholt, which currently relies on a diesel-based system for backup supply. There is an urgent need to identify alternative solutions that not only ensure reliable backup supply but also contribute to the green transition.

Solution

The project proposes the integration of a hybrid energy system consisting of solar panels and battery storage. This system would both complement the existing diesel generators and increase Anholt's energy self-sufficiency. The hybrid system will serve as a reliable backup power source, enhance sustainable electricity production, and reduce strain on Anholt's main supply via the subsea cable. By establishing an energy community, the entire island is expected to benefit from a more flexible, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly energy supply.

Impact

The implementation of the hybrid energy system is expected to reduce Anholt's CO2 emissions, improve the flexibility of the local energy supply, and stabilize local electricity prices. The project will demonstrate how diverse energy technologies can be integrated as backup solutions instead of traditional fossil fuels. The results could inspire similar initiatives on other remote locations and contribute to a broader green transition.

The project is co-financed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.
