About the project

Challenge

Pyrolysis of agricultural residues is considered a cost-competitive and scalable solution for producing carbon-negative biofuels.

While Stiesdal SkyClean has matured the pyrolysis technology to produce safe and stable biochar, hot pyrolysis gas is not a commodity, which limits large-scale deployment of the technology.

Solution

This project aims to develop a biofuel for the industrial sector from the condensable bio-oil fraction of the gas, as well as biomethane i.e. green natural gas produced from the dry fraction of the pyrolysis gas using BioGasClean’s biological methanation technology.

To expand the application possibilities of biochar, biochar-based products for building materials will be developed in collaboration with Saint-Gobain Isover.

Impact

Based on the results from long-term tests in Skive, thermodynamic process simulations will be carried out, and a detailed basic design for a large-scale plant will be made available.

The basic design will include process flow diagrams as well as preliminary sizing of the main components, such as the bio-oil condensation unit, activated carbon filters, and biomethanation reactors.

Alongside the PytoX project are the PytoCCUS and PytoN projects. Learn more about pyrolysis here.
