About the project

A groundbreaking, modular CO₂ capture facility in Aarhus has, in just 18 months, made it easier for companies to move from idea to implementation. The Danish Technological Institute’s Carbon Capture Lab — part of Power2Next Test — opens the door to fast, real-world testing of capture, utilization, and storage.

Challenge

CCUS is moving fast, but many players still lack a safe bridge between lab tests and full-scale deployment. Technologies are complex, emission sources vary (from small CHP plants to heavy industry), and the questions are many: Which method fits our flue gas? What happens once the CO₂ is captured—can we store, transport, or repurpose it? Without a flexible testbed, the path to investment-grade decisions is slow and risky.

Solution

Carbon Capture Lab is built as a modular, flexible test facility — the first of its kind in Northern Europe. The setup lets teams plug different capture technologies into a wide range of CO₂ sources and quickly switch methods and configurations. That means small energy plants, large industrials, and authorities can all get tailored trials in realistic, yet controlled, conditions.

“We’ve opened a ‘black box’ for many of our clients,” explains Simone Kevy. “They can see the plant, try out their solutions, and get concrete, digestible results before moving to implementation.”

After establishing a solid knowledge base on capture, the focus now also extends down the value chain: What do we do with the CO₂ once it’s captured? The lab tests options for transport, storage, and utilization — including as an input to e-fuels like methanol.

The targeted effort has also put Danish CCUS on the map: the Carbon Capture Lab is part of international collaborations and proposals, bringing the Danish Technological Institute into the ECCSEL network.

Carbon Capture Lab is a key activity in Power2Next Test, facilitated by Energy Cluster Denmark and supported by EU REACT funds through the Danish Business Promotion Board. With a unique modular setup and documented results, the facility helps companies take confident next steps in the green transition.

We see strong interest from both national and international players who want to test their technologies in our facility. We’re experimenting with a wide variety of methods and have gained valuable experience in developing solutions that can eventually be scaled up
