About the project

Challenge

LED information screens are used worldwide as advertising displays and information boards—both indoors and outdoors. The screens offer high image quality and can be remotely controlled using technical web-based management systems. However, these screens are highly power-consuming. The core issue is that they have poor contrast in daylight unless the brightness is increased significantly, which in turn demands a lot of electricity.

Solution

In the innovation project eInfoSys, a new generation of energy-efficient and power-saving LED screens has been developed. This new generation is based on a novel screen technology and a new control system for operating the screens. The technology and control system make it possible to receive data on wind and weather conditions and adjust the frequency and control of the LEDs accordingly. Combined with adaptive image signal processing, this results in improved image reproduction and optimized power consumption.

Result

The solution has been tested and analyzed both digitally and physically and has demonstrated significant energy savings of 30–60% without compromising image quality in daylight or direct sunlight.

The developed solutions are fully matured and now in production, and they represent ViewNet Systems' main line of performance screen products. ViewNet Systems has, among other things, delivered the Danish Parliament’s LED display screen used to show voting results, supplied advertising screens for City Hall Square in Copenhagen, and equipped gas stations across the country with pylons that display diesel and gasoline prices.
