About the project

Challenge

The challenge is when the salt is heated up to 700 degrees, then corrosion will affect the reactor’s structural materials, which are made of metal.

Idea for solution

Setting up and conducting experiments – both for materials and for possible surface coatings. This should ensure the choice of the right materials & salt type.

Project deliveries

The project is a sub-project for the development of an energy storage system based on molten fluoride salts, for storage of excess wind power and potentially excess heat from waste plants up to 1GwH. To succeed in this, it is important to gain control of the salt. When the salt is heated up to 700 degrees, it becomes aggressive and corrodes the materials. This project must ensure that you can control the salt and that the materials can hold. Therefore, the project must deliver the following:

  • Optimal Salt Type
  • Choice of material for coating
  • Chemical control system
  • Patenting
Phase 1Phase 2Phase 3Phase 4
