About the project
Challenge
Supermarkets in Denmark and abroad held an untapped potential in utilizing the internal surplus heat generated from food refrigeration.
Solution
The partners published a “cookbook” offering practical guidance on how to advance the use of surplus heat from grocery stores and have implemented a range of solutions to utilize this heat in physical stores across Denmark.
The partners also developed a specific product: a heat recovery unit with significant market potential.
Impact
- 50–60 installations and a completed concept for intelligent store optimization.
- Recommendations from the innovation project have been foundational for COOP Denmark’s energy strategy.
- Dagrofa’s heat consumption has been reduced by an average of 40 percent — in some stores up to 90 percent.
- The HRU heat recovery systems that Danfoss worked on during the project have been installed in 60 Dagrofa stores.
- Dagrofa has already saved 3.5 million kilowatt‑hours through the installations.
