About the project

The purpose of the Accelerate Upgrading of Advanced Bio-oils (UPBIO) project is to increase and accelerate the utilization of advanced bio-oils. Previous projects have focused on specific advanced bio-oil pro-duction technologies, now the refinery process step has to keep up.

The project will demonstrate the full value chain using bio-oil produced by Valmet and a number of Danish technology developers, pretreatment at Alfa Laval’s pilot plant, hydrotreatment at Topsoe’s pilot plant and rig test at Maersk. Both pilot plants will be built in the project and the development of these processes is the core of the project. Crossbridge and Maersk will support with identifying the most efficient development tradeoffs. The project will know the properties of advanced bio-oils better than ever before through advanced oil analysis developed by KU. DTU will find ways to improve the robustness of the upgrading step and finally ECD will ensure an efficient cooperation.

This will enable decarbonization of the industries: shipping, heavy transport and aviation. The partners aim to reduce emissions of these industries by approx. 100 mio. ton CO2 in 2040. The market potential for sales of these technologies to refineries in EU and the US is above 15 billion kr.
