Hanstholm Havn Enters Collaboration Agreement with Integrated Wind Solutions and Becomes Base Port for CSOV Vessels

From February 2024, Hanstholm Havn will take on the role of a permanent base port for six upcoming vessels designed to service offshore wind farms. The ships are owned by the Norwegian-Danish company Integrated Wind Solutions (IWS), which provides integrated service solutions for offshore wind farms. This collaboration aligns with the port's strategy to attract more activities related to green transition.
A partnership between Hanstholm Havn and Integrated Wind Solutions (IWS) is set to bring new activity to the port. IWS, a company listed on the Norwegian stock exchange, has six custom-built vessels in its order book, the first of which has already arrived at Hanstholm Havn.
The agreement with IWS is a significant step for Hanstholm Havn, which sees vast potential in green transition projects. The collaboration is expected to pave the way for additional exciting opportunities related to offshore wind activities in the North Sea.
First ship arrives in Hanstholm
The first of six service vessels from the IWS Fleet, named IWS Skywalker, arrived at Hanstholm on Friday morning. The ship will be prepared and christened at Hanstholm Havn before embarking on service operations at Europe’s largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank.
IWS Skywalker departed in late December from the CMHI Haimen Shipyard in China, where it was recently completed. The remaining five IWS ships are scheduled to be operational within the next two years, with deliveries staggered over time.
All six vessels are hybrid Walk-to-Work ships, specially designed for efficient offshore operations. Each vessel is equipped with an integrated gangway system that acts as a service platform, connecting the ship to wind turbines and enabling technicians to move safely between the ship and turbines.
Hanstholm as a base port
Hanstholm Havn will serve as a permanent base port for the six IWS vessels. The port will support service tasks onboard and prepare the ships for new assignments at offshore wind farms across Europe. IWS is particularly focused on markets in the UK, Germany, France, Poland, and Denmark, with Hanstholm standing out due to its strategic location and proximity to these areas.
IWS Services A/S Director Jesper Uhre Larsen highlights the port's flexibility, access to green electricity, and its network of local service companies as key factors in choosing Hanstholm:
“The most important aspect of our collaboration with Hanstholm Havn is the flexibility the port offers, allowing us to scale our activities in line with fleet deliveries and upcoming service projects. The numerous companies based in and around the harbour also play a role in mobilizing and planning larger operational and maintenance tasks for IWS.”
“Another important factor is the port’s ability to supply green electricity to our ships. IWS exclusively focuses on renewable energy projects, and all six vessels in our fleet are hybrid, capable of operating on electricity.”
Collaboration aligns with the port’s profile
The agreement with IWS is a milestone in Hanstholm Havn’s development, where fishing activities are increasingly complemented by projects involving goods handling and green transition:
“We are very pleased with the interest IWS has shown in the port. It demonstrates that Hanstholm Havn’s expanded facilities and geographic location are attractive to the wind industry. It is therefore essential that we remain proactive in meeting the industry’s needs. Our ambition is to provide locally produced green electricity while continuously developing our facilities. This is a significant step toward establishing Hanstholm as a hub for offshore wind,” says Harbour Master Søren Zohnesen.
Thisted Municipality Mayor Niels Jørgen Pedersen also expresses optimism about the opportunities the IWS agreement may open:
“Hanstholm Havn undoubtedly has significant potential in green transition projects, and the agreement with IWS confirms this. We are witnessing heightened interest and numerous opportunities that could shape an exciting future for the port.”
