About the project

Challenge

It took a lot of energy to extract oil and gas from the ground. Therefore, the oil and gas industry wanted to reduce energy consumption offshore in order to reduce the CO₂ footprint of production.

Solution

In the O/G Decarb project, a number of project partners investigated whether it was possible to electrify oil and gas production by integrating renewable energy from waves, wind and hydrogen from floating energy plants.

O/G Decarb focused on three concepts and business cases for integrating renewable energy into Danish oil and gas production:

  1. To supply oil and gas production with renewable energy.
  2. To make the energy supply for oil and gas production fossil-free in the long term.
  3. To add 5–15% hydrogen from renewable energy to the produced natural gas to reduce the CO₂ footprint of Danish North Sea production.

Result

The project led to the development of a full-scale solution for renewable energy supply of oil and gas production platforms, where floating wind and wave energy was to be used. In addition, the project identified a solution for producing hydrogen directly on the production platforms.

The company Floating Power Plant grew in line with the increasing attention surrounding the project. When the collaboration with Energy Cluster Denmark began, the company consisted of a small handful of employees, but had since grown to 15 employees – and was looking for even more.

The figures clearly showed that Floating Power Plant was not only growing, but also in full swing to realize its vision of a greener future. Especially within hydrogen, the company saw great potential to become a trusted player in the rapidly growing Power-to-X market, where demand for hydrogen was expected to increase significantly.

"When partnerships both deliver on the green transition and create new jobs, we can only be satisfied with the result."
