About the project

Challenge
DynFlex is paving the way for stronger integration of PtX (Power-to-X) facilities with overall energy systems by focusing on modeling, control systems, and the overall dynamics of the plants.

This holistic approach includes the electricity grid, solar and wind power production, power converters (AC to DC), electrolyzers, air separation, ammonia and methanol production, and their interfaces with electricity, heat, and gas grids. We develop these forecasting and optimization-based control systems and use test facilities for these components and systems to enable integrated PtX facilities to operate safely, flexibly, and efficiently.

Solution
Digitalization for flexible, dynamic, and efficient operation of grid-integrated PtX plants requires:

  • Simulation, forecasting, monitoring, control, and optimization methods
  • Fault detection, condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance methods for components
  • Real-time hardware-in-the-loop emulation and test facilities for components and systems

Effect of the Project
DynFlex will result in integrated PtX facilities that will operate safely, flexibly, and efficiently. This increases the reliability of the electricity system so that PtX plants can connect to sector coupling in, for example, district heating and transport sectors.

DynFlex develops new methods to test and operate individual PtX components and the overall system. This will improve the business case for PtX facilities.

This innovation project is part of Innomissions

Denmark has received four green mission-driven research and innovation partnerships aimed at making the country a leader in green transition. The four green partnerships bring together the country's top researchers, businesses, and organizations to position Denmark at the forefront of CO2 storage and utilization, Power-to-X, climate- and environmentally-friendly agriculture and food production, and circular economy focusing on plastics and textiles.

These four areas have been selected by the political parties in the Danish Parliament based on Denmark's strengths.

One of them is the MissionGreenFuels partnership, which aims to phase out fossil fuels in shipping, heavy road transport, aviation, and the maritime shipping industry by 2030.
