Challenge
The Gate2GreenFuels project will further develop the test and demonstration platform CCU-Hub Aalborg project at the Port of Aalborg, which in the long term will include the entire value chain for the use of CO2 in the production of sustainable fuels (including methanol as a key component). The project aims, through testing and demonstration activities at and around the Gate2GreenFuels test and demonstration site at the Port of Aalborg, to lay the foundation for decision analysis tools and roadmaps for CCU technologies.
Simultaneously with testing and demonstrations, opportunities for testing these technologies against local and regional conditions and infrastructure will be explored. In this way, changes and the cohesion with local environments are examined, and how the technologies provide benefits to the involved actors. Gate2GreenFuels will become a Living Lab, supporting industries that want to demonstrate and test existing and new technologies while also acting as a platform for knowledge sharing and capacity building going forward. Through a range of technologies, demonstrations at the physical level as well as scenario development will ensure that a foundation is created for efficiently optimizing and selecting technologies on a large scale based on both environmental and local perspectives.
Solution
The following technologies will be tested:
- Digital Twin – demonstration of resource flows in the system
- Deployment of large-scale methanol production
- Demonstration and testing of methanol synthesis plants (power2meth system)
- Demonstration and testing of hydrogen plants
- Integration of energy systems and coupling of CCU/PtX technologies
- Preparation of CO2 storage and integration into PtX plants
The project is supported by the Danish Business Promotion Board with funds from the EU’s regional fund.
Impact
After 2026, with the implementation of activities in this project, it is expected:
- A significant contribution to project maturation and the decision on FID for European Energy’s e-Methanol plant at the Port of Aalborg, which will result in significant investment in renewable energy (RE) and methanol production in Aalborg and North Jutland.
- Increased testing and development related to the methanol demonstration plant at the test facility.
- Ongoing presentations, demonstrations, and commissioning, as well as the establishment of methanol infrastructure.
- A test platform that can support competence building for employees in collaboration with knowledge and educational institutions.
In addition, the following potential effects of the project are anticipated:
- Attraction of international companies and investments.
- Expansion of the CO2 capture and utilization ecosystem locally as well as internationally.
- Attraction of public and private financial gearing and investments.
- Development of an environment for businesses to test systems and eventually establish themselves in Aalborg.
