About the project

Challenge

To contribute to the green transition in the energy industry, there is a need for solutions that can produce better and greener fuel, thereby reducing the use of fossil fuels. This is especially true in the transportation sector, including the shipping industry, which constitutes a large percentage of Denmark's total CO2 emissions. Green fuels are required.

Solution

GreenFuels is a feasibility study related to a potential new PtM (Power-to-Methanol) facility in Esbjerg. The concept involves capturing CO2 from the local waste incineration plant, Energnist, and purchasing hydrogen from a local supplier, which will then be used to produce green methanol. This methanol will be sold to shipping companies at the Esbjerg harbor. The project aims to explore the market for technologies, suppliers, infrastructure, and legislation.

Main Deliverables of the Project

  • Requirements for the selection and construction of an industrial methanol plant.
  • Requirements for the selection and construction of an industrial carbon-capture plant and CO2 handling.
  • Exploration of requirements and opportunities for the supporting infrastructure, including requirements for piping between the individual plants.
  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report, which must be submitted in order to construct the methanol plant.
  • Relevant legislation, including HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) requirements.

Expected Outcome

Through the feasibility studies, the project will identify which technologies, suppliers, infrastructure, and legislation are best suited to support the green transition to PtM. This will lay the foundation for the detailed design and construction of a PtM facility in the South Denmark Region.
