About the project
Challenge
Denmark was the first country to install wind turbines and therefore we are also the first country to have older and perhaps obsolete wind turbines standing, which we must find out to reuse or dismantle. More farmers are producing sustainable biogas based on agricultural waste. Biogas can be used for some things, eg connected to the heating system, but is not refined enough to replace the gas we currently use in the gas system.
Solution
The project will investigate the possibility of using older wind turbines for the production of biomethane. Biomethane is produced on the basis of biogas, but has a higher value and more uses than biogas. Many farmers today have biogas plants or supply biomass to biogas plants. The project will prepare plans for how to use energy from old wind turbines and biogas for decentralized production of biomethane.
Effect
The project can contribute to a better utilization of biowaste from agriculture and reduce the use of natural gas in the Danish district heating network.
The project was financed by the Ministry of Research and Education.
