HyRely – Reliable Hydrogen Production
Facts
About the project
Challenge
According to a Danish market survey, two-thirds of the companies surveyed demand services related to certification and testing for Power-to-X. It is therefore clear that there is a need to expand compliance and performance testing capacity for electrolysis modules and systems, while also requiring third-party evaluation of these.
In HyRely, the partners will address this need to ensure reliable documentation of quality across the value chain for electrolysis-based hydrogen production. The focus is on regulatory requirements for documenting qualification testing for certification purposes.
Solution
The aim is to develop a type certification for electrolysis plants (a third-party testing procedure), including qualification testing that covers, but is not limited to, performance testing, qualification testing, and verification of safety measures to ensure safety and reliability in hydrogen production using electrolysis.
Expected Outcome/Impact
The result of the project will be a certification scheme or guidelines for the approval of electrolysis plants, clearly defining the types of requirements and tests for the electrolysis plant, making it easily connectable with a given sector.
The goal of the project is that the certification scheme will not be limited to supporting only one particular sector (e.g., energy systems, green fuels, hydrogen for heating, or the transport sector), but should be broad enough to support all sector coupling while serving as a quality stamp for the specific electrolysis plant. For certification bodies within Power-to-X, there will be an estimated increased revenue of DKK 400,000 per year. However, the primary increase in revenue is expected to come through increased Danish exports of electrolysis equipment/plants.
A market analysis from 2021, prepared by Rambøll for the Danish Energy Agency, provides an estimate of Danish exports of Power-to-X solutions in 2035 under various scenarios. Based on this market analysis, the effects of establishing a Danish market for the certification of electrolysis plants are estimated to contribute to an increase in Danish exports by 0.5 percent in 2035.
The total estimated Danish export potential in 2035 (CAPEX-based across Power-to-X companies and industries) is estimated to range between DKK 54-90 billion, resulting in an increased Danish export value of approximately DKK 272-450 million.
