About the project

Challenge

With globally increasing production and growing transportation needs, CO2 pollution is also rising exponentially. This results in measurable and significant climate-related consequences, making the reduction of global CO2 emissions a high political priority. For many companies, this means that both now and in the future, budgeting for CO2 disposal is necessary to achieve mandatory climate goals (neutrality).

Solution

Through the biological photosynthesis process (artificial light and CO2), the Carbon Utilization Reactor (CCU), a type of photobioreactor, produces algae-based oils and proteins, as well as pure oxygen, with a high consumption of CO2. Waste heat is the only byproduct, which can be fully utilized.

The final products are high-value items such as omega-3 oils and/or protein-rich biomass. This promotes resource efficiency by incorporating a circular use of natural resources. The CU reactor system has a plug-and-play setup and can be delivered in 40” containers on-site, monitored from central service centers and by on-site partners. This CO2 capture technology will help enhance national competitiveness and position Northern Jutland as a hub for sustainable CO2 use.

The project goals include:

  • Creating the final full-scale design for the CC reactor
  • Designing and implementing an efficient power supply system
  • Implementing a control system and data management for process optimization
  • Assembling all physical components
  • Monitoring, measuring, and optimizing the efficiency of the CC reactor

The design phase is based on Algicel’s earlier project (Q2 2022 – Q2 2023), which developed a scaled model partially produced by Roblight. The goal is to finalize the detailed technical package for constructing the CC reactor, developing the unit’s control system, 1MW power supply, and producing a full-scale demo.
