About the project
Challenge
In future PtX plants, there will be great potential in utilizing surplus heat in surrounding district heating networks or in dedicated thermal storage systems. Surplus heat is a core element in the profitability of a PtX plant when it is in operation. The challenge that the project aims to address is that, with the establishment of a 100MW electrolysis plant at GreenLab Skive, there will be a large amount of surplus heat. The thermal energy must be utilized by enabling other plants in the park to use it. There will be so much heat that it would be beneficial to consider transporting the energy to district heating companies north of GreenLab, which mainly operate on natural gas.
Solution
The project's aim was to develop scenarios for using surplus heat from PtX plants in a combined solution with a local district heating system (energy community) and a transmission system for existing district heating distribution companies.
The project was supported by the Ministry of Education and Research.
Impact
The project demonstrated how one piece (surplus heat) in the larger PtX puzzle could be used in relation to local district heating companies. Since it was a feasibility study, GreenLab was expected to actively scale the project towards an EUDP or Horizon Europe project in the demonstration phase. The experiences would be carried over into future projects and are expected to be replicated at other locations in Denmark, the EU, and globally.
