Development of a Competitive Converter with High Efficiency for H2 Electrolysis System

Facts
About the project
Challenge
Limited efficiency in converters for PtX systems.
Solution
Cost reduction and energy efficiency are crucial for the future deployment of PtX systems. To improve electrical efficiency, there is a need for new power electronics from both the generator/grid side (AC/DC) and the direct electrolysis side (DC/DC) converters. To further reduce costs, new topologies and active and passive components are required. The project explores the potential for building cheaper and better power converters for electrolysis by focusing on medium-voltage components as an attractive alternative to low-voltage components in large systems. The project will involve testing a "small" 50kW system with the aim of scaling the results and learnings to large (MW) systems after the project.
Impact
The project will also result in a clear indication of how converter systems for electrolysis can be produced with greater than 99% efficiency and a 30% reduction in manufacturing costs.
