About the project

Challenge

Power-to-X is considered one of the key technologies for achieving climate goals and harnessing the potential of offshore wind, both locally in the Danish North Sea and globally. However, the most mature electrolysis technologies currently have limited conversion efficiency, with about half of the energy lost in the conversion from electrical power to green fuels. Since electricity costs account for up to 80% of the production costs for green fuels, it is crucial to develop electrolysis technologies with high efficiency to minimize energy waste and reduce costs.

Solution

High-temperature electrolysis is an emerging technology that can halve energy losses, but it is not yet fully matured due to limited operational lifespan. Dynelectro has patented a new operational method that can increase the lifespan from approximately 2 years to up to 10 years, potentially making high-temperature electrolysis the preferred technology for large-scale Power-to-X production.

Key Deliverables

  • Optimization of "AC:DC stacks" from Elcogen.
  • Construction of a 40 kW module based on four E3000 stacks from Elcogen.
  • Upgrading the existing Dynamic Electrolyser Unit (DEU) for operation with the 40 kW module.
  • Integration of the DEU into the Syslab at Risø (DTU).
  • Demonstration of the DEU's robustness in a +6-month test.

Expected Outcome

Green hydrogen is expected to meet 24% of the global energy demand by 2050, representing a CO2 reduction potential of 14 billion tons annually. This electrolysis technology will operate dynamically, enabling it to adapt to the fluctuating renewable energy production from sources such as wind turbines.

Part of Innomissions

The EU funds four green, mission-driven research and innovation partnerships, bringing together the country’s top researchers, businesses, and organizations to position Denmark as a leader in the green transition. These partnerships address CO2 storage and utilization, Power-to-X, climate- and environment-friendly agriculture and food production, and circular economy with a focus on plastics and textiles.

This innovation project is part of Innomissions 2: MissionGreenFuels – Green Fuels for Transport and Industry. The MissionGreenFuels partnership focuses on phasing out fossil fuels in shipping, heavy road transport, aviation, and the maritime shipping industry by 2030.
