About the project

How do we solve some of the energy sector's most complex challenges - and bring concrete solutions into play? Three projects under the Digital Energy Hub show the way. With industry collaboration, digital technologies and innovative power, we can ensure better utilization of the electricity grid, secure sharing of energy data and better balancing in the electricity system.

Challenge

Denmark needed more digital, innovative companies in the energy sector that could raise the digital competencies within, among other things, artificial intelligence and machine learning, so that we could future-proof Denmark's position as a strong energy technology player and strengthen the Danish energy system.

Solution

At the Digital Energy Hub, we supported the development of future successful companies within digitalization and energy technology by providing optimal conditions for data-driven innovation to SMEs, large enterprises, and entrepreneurs. Together, we worked to make Denmark’s energy sector the most sustainable in the world.

By facilitating new interdisciplinary collaborations, innovation sprints, and access to Center Denmark’s data platform containing large volumes of data from, among others, district heating, water, and electricity, SMEs and large companies were able to collaborate on advancing the development of new technologies in the energy sector. This included data-intelligent solutions, service platforms, and new business models.

Result

The innovation project Digital Energy Hub has led to phase 2, Digital Energy Hub 2.0, which is funded by the Danish Industry Foundation from 2025–2028 with DKK 19.7 million and facilitated by Energy Cluster Denmark, DigitalLead, and Center Denmark.

Several innovation sprints under Digital Energy Hub were completed and led to innovative solutions to specific industrial challenges in the energy and utility sector.

  1. In Sprint 1 with TREFOR, seven SMEs participated and worked intensively to develop solutions aimed at improving flexibility in the electricity grid. The sprint resulted in concrete solution proposals, new collaborations between SMEs, and increased access to networks and funding opportunities for the participants.
  2. In Sprint 2 with KMD and the Alexandra Institute, 18 experts from the energy sector came together to provide recommendations for the establishment of a Danish energy data space. This initiative could make it easier to share data within the energy industry and contribute to the green transition.
  3. In Sprint 3 with Energinet, 25 experts in energy sector digitalization were brought together. They jointly developed recommendations and action plans on how to ensure balance in the electricity system and how to include smaller energy units. The sprint led to Energinet's decision to publish imbalances in real time.
