About the project

Challenge

To utilize the surplus heat from methanol synthesis and distillation in the local district heating network.

Solution

The project will demonstrate and test how surplus heat from a large-scale PtX facility can provide attractive, CO2-free, and competitive heat to local district heating networks. The heat utilization is enabled by increasing the temperature of the surplus heat using state-of-the-art (SoA) heat pump technology.

Impact

In addition to supplying CO2-neutral fuel, European Energy, in collaboration with Aabenraa-Rødekro District Heating and Danfoss, has identified an opportunity to utilize around 250 TJ of surplus heat from the PtX facility to partially replace the current wood chip-based district heating supply.
