Common Equipment Towers

Challenge

The wind industry today uses different types of equipment for transport and storage of tower sections for offshore wind turbines. This is despite the fact that the wind turbine towers are very similar across manufacturers in the industry. The difference in the equipment used for transport on trucks and ships makes it difficult for the subcontractors who handle the freight of the tower sections to streamline the task and thus reduce costs.

Solution

The partners in Common Equipment Towers have designed and tested common transport and storage equipment for offshore wind turbine towers. The equipment can be used from the time the tower is produced until it is erected and assembled in the port from which the offshore wind farm is to be shipped. The solution will reduce the wind industry’s costs of transporting wind turbine tower sections, as the supply chain will in future be able to use the same equipment for transporting wind turbine tower sections from different suppliers. just as it is known, for example, from standard containers or the euro pallet in other sectors.

Result:
  • A design that can be used for all tower sections Ø4-7, up to 200 tons.
  • The design is freely available and can be used by anyone without restrictions (download).
  • Evidence that the wind industry can work together on concrete industrialization with physical output.
